The Woman with the Blue Star by Pam Jenoff

The Woman with the Blue StarThe Woman with the Blue Star by Pam Jenoff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm an enormous historical fan. I'm an even bigger lover of WWII historical fiction. I enjoy reading about those who were on the good side throughout WWII and how they overcame adversity. I knew I had to read Pam Jenoff's The Woman with the Blue Star as soon as I saw the description.

Sadie, a Jewish girl,, hiding with her family in the sewers, and others, follows the tale of German soldiers taking the Jews out of their homes and branding their city. Then we have Ella, a polished girl who can wander around the city because of her aunt's relation with the German soldiers. However, Ella doesn't feel like this and finds herself supporting Sadie soon.

This is such a crushing story. Although the strength is beyond understanding, the strength of characters is more than most people are obligated to do and handle. I love Jenoff's personalities absolutely. They are powerful, but they also have moments when they cannot be strong and show the level of vulnerability that breaks your heart into millions. Sometimes Ella's meek, but at others, she's silently fierce. She does stuff to help her, not even realize she does. At this point, Sadie's my superhero. She survives because she knows everything she needs to do, and she knows that she has no other choice.

While reading this book, I felt so many different things. I felt hope, distress, anxiety, concern, love, and tranquility. It shows just the type of writer she is that Jenoff could make me feel that much in 400 pages. Completely perfect. Not only that, but even when we sprang between Ella and Sadie, the story was well-conceived and flowed seamlessly.

The story was never boring. From the very first moment, I had been intrigued and flipping pages. I wanted to know what's going on and how it's going to end. I didn't wait at all for the end, either. I thought I knew what ended in this period, the most historical fiction novels. One thing occurs of two. Either they survive, and we see after the war what happened to them, or they die. This is it. This is it. I didn't see this man coming with some twist, and I appreciated it very much. It was an unfortunate, happy ending, if that makes sense.
